Full Biography
Toby Hanks was principal tuba of the symphony orchestras of Puerto Rico, San Antonio, Minnesota, the Casals Festival Orchestra, the American Composers Orchestra, and, for thirty-three years, the New York City Ballet Orchestra at Lincoln Center. He played with the Chautauqua Symphony for thirty years. For fifteen years he was a member of the internationally acclaimed New York Brass Quintet with concerts and recordings worldwide. As a freelance performer at the center of the New York scene, Toby performed with practically every major metropolitan-area ensemble, including the New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, American Brass Quintet, Speculum Musicum, the Contemporary Chamber Music Ensemble, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony, and many others. His discography includes two solo recordings, which were received with critical acclaim. Mr. Hanks appears regularly as clinician, coach, and conductor at colleges, universities, and brass events and teaches or has taught at most major conservatories in the northeastern United States. Manhattan School of Music faculty since 1974.
